Training of Mental Health Counsellors
Students at BU are profoundly affected by the environment in the Occupied Territories. In 2007, Fobzu was awarded Big Lottery funding to provide a professional training diploma entitled, 'Improving the Mental Health of Children and Families in the West Bank, through the provision of professional diploma programmes in Schools Counselling'. This project was carried out in partnership with The Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) in Ramallah.
The project came about when a vital need for counselling was highlighted by a survey conducted by Birzeit University . It found that a high percentage of its students had been affected by the erratic environment in the Occupied Territories. While the project was aimed mainly at youth, it did not exclude other priority groups such as women and families. It therefore enabled victims of violence, trauma and abuse to find solutions to their problems and resolve difficulties through the mental health service. These services included group therapy and discussions as well as cultural and social services.
